Cash Flow Finance for
Australian Businesses

Cash flow finance is funding that lenders assess on the money your business brings in (your future revenue and the invoices customers owe you) rather than on property or hard assets you may not have to offer. Dark Horse Financial arranges cash flow finance through a large panel of lenders and matches your business to a structure that suits how your revenue actually moves, so you aren't left shopping every lender on your own.

The team at Dark Horse Financial were fantastic to deal with when helping me organise finance for my business. Jeff was an absolute dream to work with, no problem or issue was ever too big, and he made everything happen quickly and smoothly. What I thought might take weeks was sorted in a matter of days, and the finance itself was approved within a day. I’ve used plenty of finance companies and lenders before over the years, but the service from Dark Horse Financial is second to none. I’ll definitely be sticking with them from now on. Highly recommend Jeff and the team.

Understanding the Product

What Is Cash Flow Finance?

Cash flow finance is an umbrella term for funding secured against your business's future revenue or receivables instead of property or equipment, and it covers invoice or debtor finance, revenue-based facilities and unsecured short-term business loans. Approval rests on how you trade, not what you own. Invoice finance and working capital loans are two specific ways it can be structured.

Common Uses

What Cash Flow Finance Can Be Used For

Most businesses come to us for one of these reasons, and plenty have two or three going on at once.

🧾

Covering a short gap when an ATO bill or payroll lands before your customers have paid

πŸ“¦

Stock or growth that has to be paid for before the revenue you know is coming actually lands

πŸ“†

Seasonal swings, say a retailer building up for Christmas or a cafΓ© getting through a slow winter

⏳

Waiting on customers who pay slowly, or on long invoice terms

πŸ”§

Paying for an urgent equipment repair without pulling cash out of day-to-day trading

🀝

Getting an urgent supplier paid on time so the relationship and your trade terms stay intact

Cash Flow Finance Options

Cash Flow Finance Options

Cash flow finance covers a few structures, and the right one really depends on where your money is getting stuck.

🧾

Invoice / Debtor Finance

Draw against unpaid invoices owed by other businesses, so cash tied up in 30 to 90 day terms lands in your account now instead of later.

Working Capital Loans

A set amount paid out up front for the day-to-day costs of running the business and paid back over an agreed term, good for owners who've got a fair idea of what they need and when.

Unsecured Short-Term Business Finance

Funding over a shorter term where no property gets put up as security and the lender looks at your trading and revenue instead, useful when the need is real and time isn't on your side.

Suitability

Who Is Cash Flow Finance Suitable For?

It tends to suit businesses like these:

  • βœ“Service businesses and agencies with no property to put up as security
  • βœ“Retailers and hospitality venues riding out seasonal peaks and troughs
  • βœ“Businesses waiting on slow-paying customers or long invoice terms
  • βœ“Businesses that need to fund stock or growth before the revenue comes in
  • βœ“Businesses a bank has declined because there were no hard assets to secure against
  • βœ“Established businesses with a steady trading history but not much in fixed assets

Eligibility

Am I Eligible for Cash Flow Loans?

Every lender sets its own criteria for cash flow loans, but most of them look at the same handful of things.

  • How long your business has been trading
  • Consistent revenue, and a trading history the lender can see in your bank statements
  • An active ABN, plus GST registration where it applies
  • Your business and personal credit history
Working with a large panel of lenders means that when one lender's criteria don't fit, credit history included, there are often others that assess things a bit differently. No broker can promise an approval though, and we won't either.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about cash flow finance and cash flow loans.

What's the difference between cash flow finance and a working capital loan?
+
Cash flow finance is the umbrella term for funding assessed on your revenue and receivables, and a working capital loan is one specific structure that sits under it, usually a lump sum repaid over a set term. There's more detail on our working capital loans page.
Do I need property as security for cash flow finance?
+
Usually not, no. Most cash flow finance is assessed on how your business trades rather than what it owns, and there are unsecured cash flow loans that don't need any property at all, as well as facilities like invoice finance where the receivables your customers owe you do the job property security would otherwise do. Property security still has its place though, particularly for businesses that are fairly new and don't have much trading history to show a lender yet, or where there's been some bad credit in the past, because offering property can help get finance or other facilities over the line when an unsecured option isn't on the table.
How fast can cash flow finance be approved?
+
Some unsecured cash flow finance facilities can be approved and funded within 24 hours, while others, particularly larger or secured facilities, take longer. Timing for any cash flow loan comes down to the lender, the structure and how complete your application is when it goes in, and we'll give you a realistic idea once we know your situation.
Can I get cash flow finance with bad credit?
+
Yes, there are cash flow finance options available for businesses with bad credit. Each lender on our panel looks at credit history a bit differently, and while one might knock back a cash flow loan over a past default or a rough patch, another may care more about how the business is trading today, especially where revenue is steady and there's a reasonable explanation behind the credit issue. We'll be upfront with you about what's realistic for your business.
How much can I borrow with cash flow finance?
+
Cash flow finance through our panel ranges from around $10,000 up to $50 million, which covers everything from a smaller business wanting a buffer for payroll right through to larger operators funding big contracts or a growing debtor book. Where you land in that range depends on your turnover, how consistent your trading has been, which structure you're using (an invoice finance facility tends to grow with your sales ledger, for example, while a cash flow loan is usually sized off your revenue) and how the lender assesses your business overall.
Is invoice finance the same as cash flow finance?
+
Invoice finance is one structure inside the broader cash flow finance category, where you draw against the invoices your business customers owe you so the facility moves up and down with your debtor book. Cash flow finance as a whole also takes in working capital loans, unsecured short-term finance and other cash flow loans that are based on your revenue rather than specific invoices. For a business billing on 30 days end of month, like a transport or labour hire company, invoice finance is often a natural fit, but it isn't the only option and it's worth weighing up against the others.
What documents do I need to apply for cash flow finance?
+
For many lines of credit and unsecured overdrafts, all that's required is 6 to 12 months of business bank account statements, along with your ABN and ID for the directors. Larger cash flow finance facilities or invoice finance may also call for things like an aged debtors report, BAS statements or financial statements. Every lender asks for something slightly different, so once we know which lenders suit we'll give you the exact list and make sure nothing's missing before your application goes in.
